When measuring something in inches, we use fractions to specify parts of an inch.  Therefore, it is important to be able to quickly manipulate fractions.  Simplify the following fractions.

 

i)       12/16

j)       6/8

k)     18/32

l)       2/4

Answer the following short questions.

 

a)    Tasha wants to build a snowboard.  To start, she needs a board that is 32 and 1/2 inches long.  However, after cutting her board, she measures it at 32 and 10/16 inches.  How much does she need to remove?

b)    Miranda has to cut her ringuette stick so that it is 9.5 inches shorter than her height.  If she is 5 ft, 6 and 3/4 inches tall, how long does she need to cut her stick?
