LESSON 02 –
VEX ROBOTICS

TOOLS NOTE

BASIC TOOLS

Here are the most commonly used tools in vex:

Small Hex Key / Screwdriver

Size: 5/64”

This tool is used for the small motor screws as well as the shaft locks.  We have mostly moved to using the hex screwdrivers as they are more convenient to work with.

Big Hex Key / Screwdriver

Size: 3/32”

This is the most used tool of all.  It is used for most screws that connect parts on the robot.  We have mostly moved to using the hex screwdrivers as they are more convenient to work with.

Wrench (11/32 inch & small end)

Wrenches allow you to tighten or loosen vex nuts and standoffs.

STAR DRIVER

Star Key / Screwdriver

Size: T15

Star tools are used with star screws.  These screws are must more difficult to strip.  Our school will be moving to strictly star screws in the years to come.

OTHER TOOLS

Here are other useful tools that are used from time to time:

Hacksaw

A hacksaw allows you to cut structural parts to make them fit with your robot.

File

A file allows you to get rid of sharp edges after cutting structure.

Vise-Grips

Vise-grips are useful when a screw is stripped and one cannot loosen it using a screwdriver.

Nut Driver – 11/32 inch

This nut driver works well to looser/tighten nuts when access from directly above the nut is available.
