GAME –
CONE CORNER STACKER MINIMUM MULTIPIER
(Is there a better game name?)

MATCH DESCRIPTION

A match will consist of two randomly selected teams of two facing off against each other for 2 minutes (120 seconds).  The team with the most points at the end of the match will be the winner.  Teams earn points in a variety of ways (described below) but the primary objective will be move cones to specific areas on the field.

REQUIRED FIELD MATERIALS

The game requires the following:

  • 38 yellow cones
  • 2 blue and 2 red corner bars (and brackets)
  • 2 nets (without netting)
  • 2 triballs and T-bars (with all brackets)
  • 2 blue and 2 red coloured floor tiles

Below, you will see the starting setup for the field along with the starting location for 34 of the cones.  Each of the four remaining cones is a starter cone (details below).

FIELD AREAS

TRIANGLES

The triangular areas in the corners of the field.  Red robots want to put cones in red triangles and blue robots want to put cones in blue triangles.  Note that triangles are protected and cones inside triangles cannot be touched by opposite teams.

NETS & OFFENSIVE ZONE

The nets are the areas are the ends of the field.  The red net is in the red offensive zone and the blue net is in the blue offensive zone.  The entire field is evenly separated into both offensive zones.
Red robots want to put cones in red nets and blue robots want to put cones in blue nets.  Triballs can be placed into either nets by either team.  Nets are not protected areas.

STARTING & FINAL PARKING SPOTS

Blue robots will start on blue tiles and red robots will start on red tiles.  There are points for parking on your own tile colour at the end as well (details below).

TRIBALL POST

A triball sits on top of a post that can be shaken (hit) to topple the triball to the ground.  A triball placed in a net affects scoring (details below).

STARTING LOCATION

Your robot will start on one of its two colour tiles.

Robot drivers will stand on the side with its colour triball post.  (We might change this to have teams stand near their colour’s triangles.)

STARTER CONES

Each robot has its own start cone.  The starter cone can be placed anywhere before the match.  This includes inside the triangles, the nets, on another cone or on the robot.

Placing a starter cone in each triangle, a team avoids the risk of getting a Multiplier value of zero.  More on this below.

SCORING

Offensive cones (1 point)

  • Cones that are in the offensive zone are worth one point for that team.
  • Cones that sit on the middle seam of the field are worth zero for both teams.
  • Cones in an offensive zone cannot be touching a robot of that colour or the cone’s value is zero.
  • Stacked cones are each worth one point in the offensive zone.
  • Cones that are in the triangles or net are not scored as offensive cones.

Net cones (M points)

  • Each cone in a net is worth M points for the team of that colour.
  • The value of M is determined by the cones in the triangles (see below).

Net triballs (Cone reduction/addition)

  • Triballs in a net are equal to three cones.
  • A triball in its own colour net add three cones to that net.
  • A triball in the opposite colour net removes (up to) three cones from that net.

Triangle cones (M value determination)

  • M, which stands for Multiplier, is the value of each cone.
  • M is the minimum of the two triangle scores for your colour.
  • For each triangle, its triangle score is determined in the following way:
    • Floor cones are worth 1 point.  These are level-1 cones.
    • Cones sitting on top of floor level cones are worth 2 points.  These are level-2 cones.
    • Level-3 cones are worth 3 points.
    • Level-n cones are worth n points.
    • Note: The triangle bar is considered ground but the walls are not.

Parking (3 points)

  • A robot gets 3 points for fully parking on its tile colour at the end of the match.

RULES

Breakdown – You may not touch your robot during the competition.  If something becomes unplugged or disconnected, you will not be able to plug it back in or reconnect it.  So make sure things are secure.

Contact – Contact between robots is allowed and will occur regularly when they are competing for cones or triballs.  A robot is not allowed to simply ram another robot to hope to damage it.  Any attempt to disconnect cables or hit the electronics of another robot can lead to disqualification.

Triangle Access – While nets can be scored on from the side, a robot should give right of way to opposing robots trying to put a cone in the nearby triangle.  No triangle blocking is permitted.

Triangle Attacking – Cones inside triangles are protected.  You cannot touch the cones from the opposing team’s triangles.  You also cannot hit the triangle bar intentionally to knock over the cones.

Triball Access – Both teams are allowed to move both triballs how they see fit.  The triballs cannot be intentionally removed from the field but can be placed in triangles as a strategy.  Note that triballs in triangles are not worth anything.
