ORDINARY GEAR TRAIN MECHANISM

OVERVIEW

A gear train mechanism is a device that contains two or more gears that contact each other with the goal of taking the motion from an input shaft and creating another motion on the output shaft.

An ordinary gear train is a gear train that has only one gear per shaft.

COMPONENTS

The gear that is on the input shaft is known as the drive gear.  The final gear that is on the output shaft is known as the driven gear.

In ordinary gear trains, all middle gears are idler gears.

TASK

Build an ordinary gear train similar to the one in the image below.  You are welcome to use different gear sizes.

QUESTIONS

How does the idler gear impact the output motion?  What would happen if another gear was added in the gear train?
