LESSON 01 – ABOUT ENGINEERING

WHAT IS ENGINEERING?

Engineering is the design, analysis, and/or construction of works for practical purposes.  Engineers use imagination, judgment, and reasoning to apply science, technology, mathematics, and practical experience. (Source: Wikipedia)

Science says: Radio waves can be transmitted and received.

Engineering says: Let’s make cell phones!

WHAT KINDS OF ENGINEERING ARE THERE?

There are many different types of engineering.  At Laurentian University, you can study to become a mining engineer, a metallurgical engineer, a mechanical engineer, a chemical engineer or a civil engineer.  Unfortunately, only the first two options a fully offered.

Here is a partial list of engineering types:

           Mining

           Metallurgical

           Chemical

           Civil

           Biological

           Electrical

           Aerospace

           Software

           Computer

           Mechanical

           Agricultural

WHAT IS REVERSE ENGINEERING?

Engineering is the application of science.  The way in which science is applied is often quite complex.  Some engineers therefore sometimes take products apart to understand how they were put together.  This is known as reverse engineering.
