LESSON 01 – TERMINOLOGY & BASICS

WORK EXAMPLES - OHM’S LAW

EXAMPLE #1

The current in a circuit is 0.05 amps.  The total resistance is 2000 ohms.  What is the voltage drop across the circuit?

SOLUTION

V = ?

I = 0.05 amps

R = 2000 ohms

V = I x R

   = 0.05 amps x 2000 ohms

   = 100 volts

Therefore, the voltage drop is 100 volts.

EXAMPLE #2

A 12 volt battery is connected to a 300 ohm resistor.  What current travels through the circuit?

SOLUTION

            V = 12 volts

            I = ?

            R = 300 ohms

            V = I x R

            12 volts = I x 300 ohms

            12 volts / 300 ohms = I

            0.04 amps = I

            There, the current is 0.04 amps or 40 milliamps.
