ACTIVITY – TRANSMITTING DATA

In groups of four, you will form a data transmission team. Your team will be responsible for transmitted various messages visually across the room.

Roles

· Data parser prepper

o Get the message that needs to be transmitted.

o Gives each symbol one at a time to the transmitter. May help the transmitter by encouraging them to slow down or go faster.

· Data transmitter

o Does action that represents the symbol so that the receiver can get the transmission.

o Determines the speed at which to provide the transmission.

· Data receiver

o Can nod to confirm reception of symbol (if rules of transmission permit this).

o Can do “my head is exploding” symbol to ask transmitter to restart from the beginning.

o Passes on received symbols to data recorder.

· Data recorder

o Write down received symbols.

o Converts received symbols into message (if not already done).

o Presents complete message to the teacher.

You will do different exercises where you will need to transmit data across the classroom. Rules may be applied as the tests change.

Before each transmission

Your team will be aware of all of the symbols that can be sent (language).

Your team will decide on which actions will represent each symbol.

Your team will decide on the role of each person. Each person has to serve at each role at least once.

Groups of 5 must sit one person out. The person sitting out changes every time and everybody must take their turn.

Your prepper & transmitter will stay at one side of the room. Your receiver and recorder will go to the other side of the room. Then, your prepper will go get the message to be transmitted from your teacher.

Example test:

Language: A, B

You need to transmit ABBA one character at a time across the room. Your recorder needs to write this information down.

Example test 2:

Language: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

You need to transmit 543210 one character at a time across the room without talking.

Real tests

You will be given other transmissions to transfer in a similar way. Some may be longer or may have different symbols.
