VIDEO PROJECTS - SHORTIES

SHORT VIDEO TASKS

All shorties projects should:

·        Have a storyboard (when applicable)

·        Consists of multiples shots with a variety of shot types and angles,

·        Have a reasonable quality of lighting,

·        Have a reasonable quality of filming (stable camera, good framing)

·        Have a reasonable quality of audio,

·        Have a good quality of editing (clips cut a proper location)

·        Only consist of shots where the acting is reasonable

#1-SIMPLE SCENE

You will plan, record and edit a simple scene.  The focus is to work on breaking your scenes up into multiple shots (video composition).

Possible ideas (but do what you want):

·        A person walks down the hall and enters a room.

o   Include a placement shot showing lockers and the person helps the viewer know we are in a school.

o   Perhaps include a closer shot of the person walking toward the camera.

o   Perhaps include a shot of the person walking by the camera.

o   Perhaps include a shot of the person walking around a corner.

o   Perhaps include the person high-five or have another quick interaction with somebody else.

o   Include a shot of the person approaching the door.

o   Include a close-up of the door knob getting turned.

o   Include a shot from inside the room showing the person entering.

·        A person is thirsty, fills up their water bottle and joyously takes a drink.

o   Consider the person thinking “water, water, water” as they approach the water fill-up station

o   Include a close-up of the water filling the bottle.

o   Include a close-up of the drink and the reaction.

#2-NARRATED SCENE

You will plan, record and edit a single scene with no audio.  You will then add narration to the clip.

#3-BACK AND FORTH

You will film two people in different scenes.  Your shots will then flip from one person to the other going back and forth between the two scenes.  In the end, the two people come together into a single scene.

#4-MAGIC APPEARANCE

You will film a person in a scene (with multiple shots).  In one of the shots, an object (or a person) will seemingly magically appear or disappear.  This is accomplished by creating one shot out of two shots that are filmed from the exact same angle – one with the object and one without.

NEW-MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS INTRO

Pretend you (or your group) will be doing video morning announcements.  You must create a 15-second intro for you or your group.  You must have audio.  Note that your video MUST be exactly 15 seconds long.

#5-STOCK VIDEO INSERT

OPTION #1
Search the internet for royalty-free stock video sites.  Find a video clip that you like and incorporate it into a simple scene.  You will plan, record and edit that scene that will make use of the stock video clip.

OPTION #2
You will create an entire video using royalty-free stock videos that you find online.  It is probably best to create an informational video such as “The world is wonderful, let’s protect it”.

#6-CONVERSATION

You will plan, record and edit a single conversation scene.  You should first look at other examples of video conversations to get ideas in regards to shot distances, angles and cuts as well as dialogue.  Don’t forget to test your device for audio quality.   It may be necessary to use a microphone.

POSSIBLE ADDITION
You will do a conversation video (see above) but also include a close-up or an extreme close-up to show a reaction or an emotion – such as surprise or anger.

#7-FIGHT SCENE

You will plan, record and edit a short fight scene.  You must avoid all unplanned shots.  Your actors must have a pre-determined goal in each shot.  If an actor laughs, you must reshoot the shot.  Focus on a few key moments.

#8-EXPLORE WITH LIGHTING

You will film a person under different lighting situations to explore the value of filming without light, near a window, near/under hallway lights, with front lighting, back lighting and 3 point lighting.  Start by looking at a few videos about lighting to give you a few lighting setup ideas.  Each shot in your video needs to have next explaining the type of lighting being used.

#9-FAMOUS LINES

Find audio of five famous movie lines such as “I’ll be back” or even a famous song lyric such as “Don’t Worry Be Happy”.  You will then film five people saying those lines in different locations of your choice.  You will then replace the audio from the video track with the audio from the famous version.  You will need to record each shot several times so that the lips match up to the wording.  This will also be work in the editing process.

#10-INTERVIEW

Plan, record and edit a short interview.  The focus will be on speaking in front of a camera, recording audio and doing minor editing.  Interestingly, to get a good result, the person asking the questions must also guide the other (ask easy questions, tell them exactly where to look, always make them feel comfortable, explain that questions may be repeated if the answer was too long, )

#11-MULTI-CAMERA INTERVIEW

Plan, record and edit a seated interview using two or three cameras.  The multiple cameras will allow for multiple video angles (likely one of each person talking and one of both people)

#11B – SLIDESHOW MOVIE

You will create a short movie clip that consists of a few photos – so a slideshow.  However, the photos will be taken to tell a continuous story.

Below is an example storyboard created by Imagyn V:

BASIC EDITING FOCUS

#12-FIVE IMAGE SLIDESHOW

Using a video editing software of your choice, you will create a slideshow with five images (or short video clips).  You will add background music.  You will add text.  You should also be able to include transitions between shots/images.  Make it fun! J

ALTERNATIVE
Tell a short story using five photos that you take.  The slideshow now is a five frame short movie.

#13-TOP FIVE

Create a top five video for something that you enjoy.  It might be the Top Five Songs of All-Time or it might be the Top Five Sporting Plays of All-Time.  Or anything you’d like.  The focus is on basic editing but also on finding and clipping appropriate video clips.

#14-SPLIT SCREEN

A phone call with split screen or picture in picture showing both people talking.  Most advanced editors allow for multiple layers and the resizing of each layer as needed.  Note: This is possible in Davinci Resolve.

#15-HIGHLIGHT PACKAGE

Start with the video of a sporting event and create a short 30-second highlight package.  Instead of focusing on editing skills, this focuses on decision making during the editing process.  There is also the challenge of dealing with so much footage.  Warning that this may be a time consuming task.

#16-MOVIE TRAILER

Start with full movie.  Keep some of the part in order to create a movie trailer for that movie or for an entire different movie.  You must be aware of copyright laws.  Warning that this may be a time consuming task.

ADVANVED EDITING FOCUS

#17-GREEN SCREEN BACKGROUND

Shoot a short clip in front of the green screen.  You will then place a different background behind the actors and props.

#18-GREEN SCREEN VIDEO BACKGROUND

Find a clip that you will place in the background of a green screen video.  This might be a clip of a famous movie scene.  Then, in front of the green screen, film someone interacting in that famous scene.  Combine the two videos.

#19-SPECIAL EFFECT

Create a video and do a special effect of your choice.  This might be changing eye colours or making lasers shoot out of your finger nails.  It’s up to you.  Have fun!
