ICT AT LOCKERBY

COMPUTER ENGINEERING 11 & 12 (ROBOTICS)

BINARY

Students will learn why computer systems use base-2 instead of the more comfortable base-10.  Students will learn to count and do basic arithmetic in binary.  Conversions to and from decimal, binary, hexadecimal will also be taught.

BOOLEAN LOGIC

Students will learn the basic logic gates And, Or, Xor, Not, Nand, Nor & Xnor. They will learn how to create circuit diagrams and truth tables using such gates.  Finally, circuit simplification using Karnaugh maps will be examined.

DIGITAL DESIGN

Students will use integrated circuits (ICs) on a breadboard to build a variety of circuits.  Classic combinational circuits such as adders, parity checkers, decoders and multiplexers will be examined.  By the end of the unit, students will have a strong understanding of how CPUs work.

SEQUENTIAL DIGITAL DESIGN

Students will create circuits with feedback loops.  This will lead to an understanding of basic memory circuits inside computer systems.  Classic circuits such as latches, flip flops and counters will be examined.

BASIC ELECTRONICS

Students will work with basic electronic devices such as capacitors, diodes, transistors, potentiometers and relays.  After this unit, students will have the ability to design, build and troubleshoot electronic circuits.

ARDUINO

Students will use their digital design and electronics knowledge to work with Arduino microcontrollers.  Students will be taught basic programming concepts in order to create more advanced products.

LINUX

Students will use Virtual Box in order to install a recent version of Linux (such as Ubuntu).  The group will explore the operating system and learn to install software on it.  We will learn how to use the bash terminal to navigate the file system.  In the end, we will examine how to create bash scripts.

VEX ROBOTICS

Students will work with our Vex Robotics robots.  They will design and build a robot and then they will learn the basics of programming a robot.  Finally, if the classes wishes, we will have an internal robotics competition to crown a champion.

HARDWARE

Students will get the opportunity to take computer systems apart and understand how they work.  They will troubleshoot computer systems and learn the most important attributes of all key hardware components.
