Gimp is an open source software. This means that it will most likely remain available for free for a very long time.

PREFERENCES

The Gimp interface is different from other programs. It will take time to get used to it. Under Edit > Preferences > Interface, you can customize the interface’s look including the theme, icon colours and default tools.

SAVING FILES

You need to save two files for each task that you do.

One file should be of type XCF which is your project working file that keeps all layers separate. This file can only be opened and viewed in Gimp.

The other file should be of type PNG. In Gimp, you need to use File > Export in order to save a PNG file of your project. This is a common image format that can be shared over the internet and viewed on all devices.
