ANIMATION BASICS

BASICS TO ANIMATION

Animation is the rapid sequential display of images.  To simulate motion, two consecutive images are similar.  The human brain fills in the gap and fools the person into thinking that there is truly full motion occurring.

Each one of the images in an animation is called a frame.  The rate at which frames are displayed is called the frame rate.

Frame rate is measured in frames per second, often shortened to FPS.

TRADITIONAL & COMPUTER ANIMATION

Traditional animation, which involves drawing each frame by hand, was the primary form of animation in television and movies until the invention of computer animation.  While animated effects were being used beforehand, the first fully animated film was Toy Story which was released in 1995.  Nowadays, computer animation dominates the industry.

ADVANTAGES OF COMPUTER ANIMATION

Instead of having to redraw entire frames which can be very time consuming, using computer animation allows animators to simply copy and paste a frame and then make alterations.  Advanced animation software programs also provide an assortment of other tools to help make animation easier.
